a little more ritual please
last night our little book club met to discuss our latest read - lynden macintyre's "the bishop's man" a book set in rural nova scotia that looks at the after-effcts of the catholic church's sexual abuse of children. macintyre (for those non-canadians here) is a well-known and well-respected journalist. and as marilee pointed out - the narrator, the "bishop's man" lived and reported his life with a journalistic, detached, stand-back attitude. this made it easier to read, but also left you wanting way more of the characters in the book. there are 4 of us in the book-club - 2 lapsed protestants, 2 lapsed catholics (one from scotland, one from new brunswick).what we did do was talk about the church in our childhoods and the importance of meaningful ritual (much of which is gone even in the catholic church).
our meetings always centre around a theme related meal and last night catherine chose "nova scotian church basement supper" - baked beans and cheese biscuits and devilled eggs and just baked rubharb pie. yum. yum.

Did you enjoy the book? It's on my must read list but here's a long wait at the library.
I have that book title written in my "Books to Read" notebook. There's probably a waiting list for it at my local library.
